It’s the holiday season and time for our second annual Made with After Effects show on motion+connect with special guests Trish and Chris Meyer. We invite talented After Effects artists to submit their work. Then, Tuesday night, December 20 – the top 10 will be featured live on motion+connect. The four judges: Chris and Trish Meyer from Crish Design, as well as Elaine Montoya and Becky Padilla from motion, will discuss the pieces – and provide suggestions, ideas – and kudos!

Finalists will be invited to call in to the show via Skype and take part in the online experience.

three easy steps:
1) upload your 5-minute or less piece to the motion.tv Vimeo group by midnight on Monday, December 12, 2011
2) fill out our online entry form, providing a link to your piece on our Vimeo group
3) attach your After Effects project file to the entry form (so we can verify it was made in After Effects)

Then, Wednesday, December 15, the top 10 finalists will be notified. If you make the cut – you’ll be asked to provide us with a high res version of your video file.

what will I get?
1) fame: the top ten finalists will be featured live on motion+connect. First, second, and third place winners will be featured on motion.tv.

about the judges
Trish and Chris Meyer are principals in Crish Design (formerly known as CyberMotion), an award-winning motion graphic design studio. The Meyers are authors of the well-known reference book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, considered the bible in its field, as well as the best-selling introductory After Effects/motion graphics book, After Effects Apprentice. Crish Design has done work for NBC, ABC, HBO, Fox, TLC, New Line, and Paramount, plus corporations ranging from Apple to Xerox.

After two decades in Los Angeles, in the summer of 2008 Chris and Trish relocated to the East Mountains area outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico (read why on their PVC blog entry). They’ve since renamed their business Crish Design as an homage to the numerous friends and colleagues who inevitably mashup their first names together into “Crish.” Indeed, they often seem to be two halves of the same brain.

Chris specializes in sound design and 3D work as well as dealing with multi-format technical issues. Chris and Trish are regular speakers at our annual motion event and recently spoke at The Adobe Post Show in October.

Elaine Montoya is a principal of Zocoloco Studios - a graphic design firm specializing in motion graphics, video for the web, and print. Founded in 1985, Zocoloco Studios has won numerous awards and has been published in HOW Magazine.

Additionally, Elaine is the Chief Imagination Officer (CIO) for the motion group - a company dedicated to the enrichment of the motion graphics, visual effects {vfx}, and animation community offering video-on-demand (motion.tv); an annual industry event (motion); the industry news portal cgnews; and live, online events – including motion+connect.

Elaine has been described as a ‘right down the middle Left Brain/Right Brain’ creative technologist. She started her college career at the University of NM with a NASA scholarship in computer science. She later went on to get a second degree in graphic design from The Art Institute of Colorado.

As a former design instructor at The Art Center, Elaine enjoys sharing her skills and knowledge with others through presentations, and workshops. She is a regular speaker at nationwide conferences sharing her expertise in After Effects, Flash, and Premiere – with a focus on Adobe Production Premium integration and workflow. She was selected by Adobe to serve as an Adobe Community Professional, which honors individuals who excel in sharing their expertise and skills with the world-wide community.

Becky Padilla is the co-founder and creative director of the motion group – an organization specializing in live events and video-on-demand for the motion picture and broadcast industries. the motion group covers trends and relevant topics in motion graphics, animation, title design, visual effects, broadcast design and screen design for the motion community. 

She is also a partner and VP of Design at Zocoloco Studios – a visual design firm specializing in print, motion graphics, title design and video on the web.

Recognized by Adobe Systems as a leader in Photoshop, Becky currently serves as an Adobe Community Professional sharing her Photoshop skills.

Becky is a mobile media artist. She creates limited edition prints using handheld devices and a wide range of mobile apps to shoot photos, draw, and composite her artwork.

about the speaker
Paul Babb was born in Castro Valley, California. He left high school at the age of 15 to travel throughout Europe and South America. Upon his return, he worked his way through college earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in two short years. Two years later he finished his Master’s Degree at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Upon graduation, he embarked on a career in advertising starting off as an assistant at Weston-Mason Associates. Two years later, he attained the position of Senior Copywriter. He was recruited by Spectrum Communications to oversee and manage the investment, financing and development of 80 cellular sites throughout the United States. This was accomplished in nine months.

For several years Mr. Babb was a marketing and sales consultant for companies such as Motorola, Intel, Hertz Properties, Capitol Records, DDB, Bush Communications and BBDO. In the early 1990s, he was hired by Electric Image as a Product Manager for its award-winning 3D animation software. While there, he designed and implemented the company’s first interactive marketing efforts, including its World Wide Web site and CD-ROM presentations. He was instrumental in the successful introduction of a mass market version of its product.

In January 1998, working with MAXON in Germany, Mr. Babb introduced CINEMA 4D to the North American market. In October 1998, Mr. Babb participated in the founding of MAXON USA to better serve the North and South American markets. He was named President and CEO of MAXON USA in 1999.

His progressive stance on product development, customer service and support for education has made CINEMA 4D one of the fastest growing 3D products in the North American market. In January, 2000, through Mr. Babb’s efforts, Apple Computer gave CINEMA 4D GO the nod as 3D application of choice on the Mac platform by bundling it Final Cut Pro, giving all desktop video artists 3D capability.

about the speaker
A certified instructor for Adobe, Apple, and Avid, Rich is a practiced expert in motion graphic design and digital video. Starting his career out in the world of broadcast journalism, Rich has always had great interest in visual communications. His producing skills were also recognized by AV Video Multimedia Producer Magazine who named him as one of the Top Producers of 2004.

Rich is a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals Instructor Dream Team, and a popular speaker on the digital video circuit. He has been the Program Manager and Technical Chair of the National Association of Broadcasters since 2003.

Rich is an internationally published author. His book, Photoshop for Video, was the first of its kind to focus on Photoshop’s application in the world of video. He is also a contributing author for Apple’s Aperture, iLife ’08 and iWork ’08, Final Cut Pro On the Spot, After Effects On the Spot, After Effects at Work, and Producing Video Podcasts.

A Master’s Degree in Project Management fills out Rich’s broad spectrum of experience. Rich enjoys traveling and digital photography, as well as teaching his kids the joys of science fiction and comic books.

Carey Dissmore is a television and media production professional with 25 years in the business. His work spans the broadcast news, entertainment, advertising, documentary and corporate ranges. He considers himself an editor first, with a heavy amount of motion graphics design as well. He uses an enormous number of tools but the biggies are Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, After Effects and the full Adobe suite.

Carey is currently working on shows for Food Network and Spike TV, as well as designing, editing and animating series of corporate and medical projects.

Carey founded the International Media Users Group (IMUG) and the MediaMotion Ball at NAB, establishing it as a strong user community event that has been running since 1998. He is active on the MediaMotion IMUG and AE e-mail lists that he helps administer.

Carey is principal of Carey Dissmore Productions, Inc., based in Minneapolis, MN.

about the speaker
Paul Montoya fell in love with radio broadcasting while he was in middle school back in the 1970s. He started working in the industry at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back.

Over his career he’s owned and managed two AM radio stations, been on-air talent, and held positions as Chief Engineer and Director of Engineering for radio stations in the Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Albuquerque, and Cheyenne markets. In more recent years, Paul has produced a range of podcast titles for his American Podcasting Network, and continues as a broadcast consultant to radio stations in the Rocky Mountain region.

Paul’s passion is anything audio. He’s used Cool Edit Pro in his work for many years – long before Adobe acquired the Syntrillium Software and changed it’s name to Adobe Audition. In addition to audio engineering, he’s directed live events including concerts, theater – and motion for the past four years.

Steve Forde recently joined Adobe as Senior Product Manager for After Effects after having spent 8 years with Gridiron Software where he was Co-Founder/CEO and CTO. Gridiron has been a partner of Adobe for years, developing complementary technologies for After Effects with their Nucleo products, which accelerate processing and throughput of the product. Steve took the company from venture funding to a global operation and moved the company from a perpetual license revenue base to a SaaS model. Steve is a serial entrepreneur and spent the 5 years before Gridiron as Co-Founder/CEO of Creative Shack Inc. where he grew the business from 2 founders to a full staff of 65 and exited the company through an acquisition by Mitel Networks. Steve also sits on the board of Black Cherry Digital Media. Steve has an education in Radio Broadcasting and Electronics.

In tonight’s QuickFIX, we’ll be talking with motion graphics designer/animator Jonathan Winbush (Warner Bros., Ellen, Marvel, CMT, MTV, National Geographic). We’ll be taking a look at his work and discussing the importance of design and storyboarding as a blueprint for animating.

Jonathan Winbush, originally from Pittsburgh, PA has become a recognized figure in both the design and animation side of motion graphics in the Los Angeles area. Working in a wide range of virtual mediums he’s done work for Ellen, Marvel, CMT, Far East Movement, Happy Madison, Warner Bros., and many more. Jonathan’s work has been published in magazines such as HDRI 3D and Advanced Photoshop. With only 5 years of professional experience in the field, Jonathan looks forward to advancing his skill sets as he works along side some of the best artists in the LA Area.

They’ve since renamed their business Crish Design as an homage to the numerous friends and colleagues who inevitably mashup their first names together into “Crish.” Indeed, they often seem to be two halves of the same brain.

Chris specializes in sound design and 3D work as well as dealing with multi-format technical issues. Chris and Trish are regular speakers at our annual motion event and will be speaking at The Adobe Post Show in October.

motion+connect :: QuickFIX

For tonight’s QuickFIX we have special guest William Lebeda, Creative Director at Picture Mill. Picture Mill is know for their title design work for numerous major motion pictures, including Mission Impossible III, Dreamgirls, The Green Hornet, and many more. One of Picture Mills’ more recent areas of expertise is 3D title design. Tonight we’ll talk with William about the process of creating title designs for major motion picture – and what changes when taking 3D into consideration. Who knows…we might even have a special guest visit from Picture Mills’ VFX Supervisor |Stereoscopic 3D genius Bryan Thombs as well.

about the speaker
Creative Director at Picture Mill, William Lebeda a graphic designer, animator and director who has worked in the field of entertainment design since the early 1990′s. Since joining Picture Mill in 1995, William has designed and directed projects for motion pictures, advertising agencies and television. In 2007, William directed the 2nd Unit for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening. He is particularly delighted to have been named the best and worst film title designer (The ID Forty, February 2003) for two wildly different projects: Panic Room for David Fincher, and Signs for M. Night Shyamalan. Previous to his experiences in California, William spent most of his youth in and around northern New Mexico. He used to draw a lot more than he does now.

William will be speaking at our annual motion event this October.
